“Story of an Hour” is a short story written by Kate Chopin on April 19, 1894. It was originally published as “The Dream of an Hour” on December 6, 1894. It was then reprinted with minor changes on January 5, 1895, as “Story of an Hour” in the St. Louis Life.
The title of the short story refers to the time between moments when the protagonist, Louise Mallard, hears that her husband, Brantley Mallard, is dead, and then learns that he is alive. Featuring a female protagonist who feels emancipated at the news of her husband’s death, “Story of an Hour” was an interesting tale by 1890s American standards.
Short Summary of Story of an Hour
“The Story of an Hour” is based on the main character Lewis Mallard, who suffers from heart disease. Louise’s sister, named Josephine, informs her about her husband’s death in a train accident. Louise is saddened to hear this and goes to her room where after a while she slowly realizes that she is happy that her husband is dead.
Although she did not harbor any animosity towards her husband, his death opened a new window of freedom for Louise. This realization is the source of his happiness and “he immediately prayed that I might have a long life”. Afterward, she goes back downstairs to see Brantley coming home.
